Choose a projector that can fill your screen from a safe mounting position. Work out image width, aspect ratio and lens-to-screen distance first; then compare brightness, resolution and connections. Short throw alone does not guarantee a fit.

Calculate throw distance using width

Throw ratio is lens-to-screen distance divided by projected image width. For a same-unit calculation, distance = width × throw ratio. A purely illustrative 10 ft wide image with a 0.70 ratio needs about 7 ft lens-to-screen distance. This is geometry, not a room recommendation or a compatibility guarantee. Native aspect ratio, selected image mode and the projector's approved image-size range can change what is practical; use its calculator and manual for the final layout.

A verified model example

BenQ lists the AH700ST as a 1920 × 1080 projector with 4,000 ANSI lumens and a 0.69–0.83 throw ratio. These specifications illustrate the checks to make, not a claim that it is best for every bay. At native full-width projection, multiplying a 10 ft image width by that range gives 6.9–8.3 ft. A narrower aspect mode may change effective geometry; confirm it with BenQ's planning tools instead of using the simple calculation as an installation drawing.

Match image area and screen shape

Buy against the usable projected surface, excluding borders and flaps. Decide whether the bay will use the projector's native widescreen image or another supported aspect ratio. Cropping or resizing to fit a narrow screen can affect usable resolution and throw calculations. Record the selected software output mode and screen width/height together. A frame's external dimensions answer a different question from the image area.

Next step: Impact screens and enclosure dimensions.

Plan the mount and beam

Sketch the lens location, projector body, bracket and cable exit. Keep them outside the golfer's club path and likely ball paths; check whether the golfer blocks the beam. Ceiling, shelf and temporary mounts each need a secure installation plan. Lens shift, optical zoom and digital correction are different adjustments; confirm which the exact model supports and how far it can adjust before deciding on a mounting point.

Compare brightness and resolution in context

A bright garage and a controlled dark bay present different viewing conditions. Ask for brightness figures using a stated standard such as ANSI lumens and compare the same basis. Do not promise that one lumen figure will overcome every room's ambient light. Native resolution is the projector's image resolution, while accepting a higher-resolution input is a separate capability. A more expensive projector cannot compensate for a poorly matched screen or a computer that cannot run the desired simulation mode.

Next step: Garage and basement system choices.

Before you order

Confirm the monitor, simulator software, computer, screen, mount, cable length and ports as one chain. Request the projector's approved mounting orientation and image-size range, and include replacement/maintenance terms in the quote. If projection is optional, start with a compatible tablet or monitor and defer it until the room plan is settled. Compare complete delivered costs rather than adding a projector price to a hardware-only budget.

Next step: Build the full simulator budget.
