Choose impact screens and enclosures by external footprint, usable image area, deflection clearance and ball containment before buying a simulator kit.

An impact screen receives the shot and can display the projected image; an enclosure adds a frame and surrounding protection. Check both the screen's intended golf use and the complete containment layout. A normal movie screen is not a substitute for an approved impact screen.

Separate image size from physical fit

Record the screen's viewable dimensions and the enclosure's external dimensions as different measurements. Carl's DIY specification sheet explicitly distinguishes overall frame dimensions from listing size. Leave room for assembly, fittings and the manufacturer's required clearance. Compare the chosen configuration, because another size from the same range can have a different footprint. Do not reduce the gap behind the screen simply to make the enclosure fit.

Next step: Measure room dimensions.

Screen clearance and tension are model-specific

Screens move when struck. The installation manual controls the wall gap, tensioning method, ties and frame protection for the exact screen/enclosure. More tension is not automatically better, and adding improvised fasteners can change how the system behaves. Obtain the current instructions before ordering and use the specified parts. If your room cannot provide the prescribed clearance, choose a different layout instead of treating the screen as a rigid wall.

Containment extends beyond the main rectangle

Plan the likely miss area above and beside the target, including high wedge shots and exposed hard frame parts. Carl's Place explains that side extensions and protected surroundings can extend containment. The required configuration depends on tee position, golfers and intended clubs. Padding, curtains and a screen work as part of a system; decorative curtains alone should not be assumed to stop a golf ball. Keep spectators outside the hitting and rebound area.

Choose the image experience after containment

Compare the manufacturer's material descriptions for image texture and intended projection use. Avoid unsupported claims that one material is always quieter, safer or more durable. Request specifications or a sample if the image matters to you. Match actual image width, height and aspect ratio to the projector and software before purchasing. A smoother image surface is not a reason to ignore mounting or use instructions.

Next step: Projector buying and placement.

DIY kit versus complete package

Ask whether the quoted kit includes frame pipes, screen, fittings, padding, side protection and mounting hardware. A parts kit may require locally sourced items, while a complete package may still omit the mat, monitor or projector. Read the included-parts list instead of relying on the package photograph. Obtain a separate installation quote where needed and check that wall/ceiling attachment is appropriate for the room.

Maintenance and before-use checks

Follow the selected screen's cleaning and care instructions, inspect attachments and look for wear or exposed hard surfaces before play. Keep the balls and hitting area clean as directed by the manufacturer. Do not publish a fixed screen lifespan based on another household's use. When comparing prices, include consumable/replacement components and delivery, then connect the containment choice to your monitor's tee position and the rest of the simulator plan.
